POLITICS OF LOCATION #4: SINTERKLAAS

The time of Saint Nicholas is once again upon us in the Netherlands, and like last year, Gen K is organizing an online event to discuss the political aspects of Sinterklaas.

We will touch on the current discussion around Zwarte Piet and how much change has happened over the past few years, as well as contemplate the position of this discussion in the greater political context of the Netherlands.

You can join us in this discussion on December 2nd at 19:30 on Teams! After we conclude the discussion, we invite you to hang around a bit longer for digital drinks 🙂 The link to our Teams environment can be found in our bio (click the linktree link to be redirected!)

This discussion will focus on the topic of race and racism in the Netherlands, and will, for the sake of education, feature mentions of extremely racist behavior and standpoints. We will however make sure that there are no images of individuals in blackface present in our presentation, as we believe that there is no use in reproducing violence for the sake of discussing it. Gen K is firmly aligned with anti-zwarte piet organizations, and we will not entertain any arguments in favor of the “traditional” zwarte piet.

Unfortunately, COVID infections and government rules mean we have to cancel our collaborative event with Queers of Utrecht for now. We hope to postpone the meetup to another date, when we’re able to organize real-life events again responsibly and safely! Are you experiencing stress from your studies? Do you feel the pressure to achieve good grades? Do you have personal circumstances that distract you? Are you feeling the societal injustices? Do you need a space to talk? Do you want to feel supported by your peers?

Gen K is organising its first peer support group! As a study association we recognise the need to pay attention to students’ well-being both in the class room and outside. Although we are not professionals, we want to create a space where students can vent, express their feeling, complain and get support. We will lead the support group and every student will have the opportunity to speak their mind and get things off their chest. There is the option to get a response from the group, but this is not necessary.

Come celebrate the end of Block 1 with us! We are once again organizing our Bi(Weekly) Drinks at the Bastaard. We picked a date in the reflection week so everyone has an opportunity to decompress and discuss non-academic topics for a change 😄. We hope to see you at the Bastaard next week!

The time has come! Gen K’s first General Assembl

The time has come! Gen K’s first General Assembly is upon us on October 26th. It will take place in room 204 at Drift 25 from 17:30 to 20:00. The General Assembly is a meeting open to all members of the study association, where the current Board presents last year’s accomplishments, financial records and… the new Board! Members in attendance will vote on the new Board, their financial proposition for next year and Gen K’s Rules of Procedure. Additionally, the General Assembly will appoint an audit committee! Attending the General Assembly is optional for members of Gen K, but we do encourage all of our members to be there if possible. After our General Assembly, the new board will have a transition period lasting at least two weeks, which they will use to craft their association plan.

After the Assembly, we will head over to de Bastaard for drinks! Even if you can’t make it to the Assembly, you are still more than welcome to join us at de Bastaard. Because Halloween is happening at the end of the week, this event is a two-for-one special where we will celebrate our former and new Board members, and the hard work we all did at the General Assembly, in costume! You are also free to wear your costume to the General Assembly itself, if you want. Of course, it is entirely up to you if you want to wear a costume. We invite everyone to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, and ensure that regardless of what your personal choice regarding costume is, you will be able to partake in both of these events.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT OUR SCREENING WITH THE ZAPATISTAS NEXT WEEK!!!

Sadly due to copyright issues we cannot screen La Vocera. Instead we are screening a different film by the Zapatistas which follows six young Mayans in Guatemala and Chiapas, who through their daily and ceremonial life, revealing their determination to resist the destruction of their culture and environment. As corporations go to the ends of the earth to extract all value, all resources, they put forth a wholly indigenous perspective in their own words, without narration. Each story touches upon a facet of the current global crisis.

The ancient Maya believed this present world would end and a new cycle arise after 5125 years. How does the story end? Does the water change color? Do the oceans collapse? Does the sky fall as the last tree is cut?

Beautifully filmed over years, the intimate accounts of the protagonists interweave with images associated with the fragile beauty of nature and the creation myth of the Popol Vuh. Ruins of a former Mayan civilization stand in the background as harbingers of our own possible fate. The Maya, like many indigenous people, believe they are the guardians of the Earth. Their cosmovision, in which all life is sacred and interconnected, presents a deeply compelling alternative to the prevailing worldview.

This screening is planned during the Zapatistas’ Tour of Life, during which they will share the story behind their movement and the history of now known Mexico, through film.

The Zapatistas are an anti neo-liberal and anti-capitalistic movement that originated in Chiapas – Mexican freedom fighters.

Last April a Zapatista delegation, called Viaje Por La Vida (Journey for Life), set sail from Mexico to Spain 500 years after the ‘conquest’ of the “New World.” They represent the seeds of the tree of life that was chopped down when the Spanish colonisers came into Mexico. When the tree got torn down the seeds spread throughout the world thus life kept existing.

The UU Week of Safety (11-15 October) will revolve

The UU Week of Safety (11-15 October) will revolve around the social safety of students. What if you feel unsafe, or like you are treated unfairly? During this week, we want to raise awareness about what students can do when confronted with unsafe situations or inappropriate conduct, for themselves and others. Several events are being organized, including is an Active Bystander training (you can find details for this, and other events at the link in our bio). The university is launching an anonymous chat option through their platform Frisse Gedachtes as well as expanding on several options for counseling and guidance at the UU Instagram. We would also like to use this time to discuss safety in the context of Gen K, so if you have any suggestions, make sure to shoot us an email!
